The science behind effective cleaning: Why water isn’t enough

In this article, we’ll delve into the reasons water alone falls short and why soaps and detergents are essential for thorough cleaning, especially in a post-COVID era.

The polar properties of water and the need for soaps

Water’s polar nature, held together by hydrogen bonds, means it possesses positively and negatively charged ends. This polarity prevents water from dissolving non-polar substances like oils and fats effectively.

Soaps and detergents, which are amphiphilic, meaning they have dual hydrophilic (water-attracting) and hydrophobic (fat-attracting) components, step in to break down fats and grease molecules and enable their dissolution in water.

Defeating bacteria and viruses

Similar to oils, bacteria and viruses like COVID-19 have a fat and protein shell. Washing hands with soap or cleaning surfaces with detergents capitalizes on the hydrophilic and hydrophobic nature of these molecules.

The hydrophobic end of soaps penetrates the fat and protein shell of bacteria and viruses, dismantling them and allowing their dispersion in water. Even if not all pathogens are eradicated, they are effectively removed and washed away.

Microfiber cloths and their limitations

While microfiber cloths are excellent at trapping dust, dirt, and microorganisms due to their fine, frizzy fibres, they fall short when it comes to heavily soiled or greasy surfaces.

Microfibers lack the capacity to dissolve chemical bonds, rendering them ineffective against soap scum and hard water stains. Moreover, they merely remove germs instead of destroying them, making detergents and disinfectants essential for areas prone to bacteria.

Proper cleaning process

Before disinfecting, removing visible dirt and grime using detergents or soaps is crucial.

Disinfectants, chosen based on their efficacy against bacteria and viruses, should be used according to instructions.

This involves applying them to clean, dry surfaces at the correct concentration and allowing sufficient contact time for effective germ eradication.

The PetraClean approach

At PetraClean, our commitment to cleanliness goes beyond water. We employ hospital-grade detergents and disinfectants, paying meticulous attention to high-touch surfaces and high-traffic areas to minimize germ transmission risks. Our dedication to excellence extends to our equipment and procedures, ensuring your office or workplace remains hygienic and safe.

Understanding the science of cleaning emphasises the significance of soaps and detergents in maintaining a clean and germ-free environment. In a world increasingly conscious of hygiene, relying on proper cleaning techniques is paramount for safeguarding health and well-being.

With PetraClean as your cleaning partner, you can rest assured that we’ll help you maintain a pristine and sanitized workspace.
